Aquagranda – November 2019

English follows

Gentil* Tutt*,

Cordialmente.

Dear All,
in the end we have some documentation about the intervention needs after the aquagranda of last November. Some other documents should be available soon.

First of all, as I have already said to some of you, risk prevention worked, as far as works of art are concerned: damages to the historic and artistic heritage were limited.
The most serious damages were for the systems and to what is essential for daily life (roofs, piers, embankments), above all because of the storm that hit the city on the evening of 12 November. You have seen the images which we sent to you and what the media reported.

The repeated flooding mainly damaged floors and obviously rising humidity and salts are starting to show up. In this regard we should remember the emergency intervention implemented by Save Venice that immediately made funds available to engage teams of people who washed the floors with fresh water, in order to reduce the damages of salt water.

Some works of art were damaged along with the wooden furniture of some churches (at link 1 of Churches of Venice, you will find the list) as well as their floors. At the other links you will find some additional pictures made by the Patriarchal Curia to document the damages in the different places. The quality is not always very good, but they are useful to understand the width of damages.

I am also forwarding to you a link where you will find some documentation about the Scuola Grande di san Giovanni Evangelista, our first office. One of the requests is related to the safeguarding of the entire monument. As a matter of fact a state-of-the-art fire prevention system has been recently realised, and it was protected from floods up to 170 cm. November events have proven that it is not enough and the protection basin should be raised up to 200 cm.

The Executive Committee – as you will see in the Minutes which I will send you tomorrow – has decided to propose a joint restoration of an object damaged in November, that each Member can finance with about 1,000.00 €.
We thought – but the final choice will be made on Thursday and I kindly ask you to let me know what you think by then – to choose between the Crucifix of san Niccolò dei Mendicoli (the estimated cost is about 18,500.00 €, VAT included) and the safes of san Giovanni Evangelista (the estimated cost is about 18,500.00 €, VAT included).

If something is not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Carla Toffolo
